The TBE (Tick Borne Encephalitis) Virus belongs to the group of Flavi viruses. There are two subtypes, the Central European Encephalitis (CEE) which is endemic in Southern Germany and the Russian Far East Encephalitis (RFSE) which causes a severe course of disease.
The TBE Virus is generally passed on to humans by infected ticks (Ixodes ricinus). Most cases of the disease are observed in the spring and during the summer. In some years the peak of the disease is in the fall, depending on the activity of infected ticks.
The TBE Virus IgG/IgM are qualitative and quantitative tests for detection of human antibodies in serum, plasma or cerebrospinal fluid against TBE Virus. Positive IgM antibody detection as well as significantly increasing IgG antibody titers (paired sera), indicate an acute infection. The IgG assay is used for vaccination control.
