The past few decades have brought new challenges in this area, including new and re-emerging diseases; the appearance and spread of antibiotic resistance; and the growing realization that microorganisms seem to be at least partly responsible for causing a surprising number of chronic diseases. These events increasingly challenge health and medical care.
