The experience of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), bird influenza , multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR) and bovine spongiforme encephalopathy (BSE) shows the risk posed by emerging infectious diseases or most likely silent genetic adaptation by co-infection of cross-species strains, but also the power of strongly coordinated global surveillance and public health measures, coupled with scientific research, to keep infection under control.
